King's Landing Sweet Corn Fritters

Howdy,
Tonight I made a pre-Game of Thrones treat straight from the Game of Thrones Cookbook and King's Landing.
Sweet Corn Fritters!
I always love when whole corn kernels are used in recipes, especially in cornbread, so I immediately knew these fritters would be no exception. To start first take kernels from about 2 ears of corn, saute with butter and set aside.
In a bowl whisk the egg and milk together, then mix in the flour and cornmeal. Add a pinch of pepper and the corn. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a non-stick pan until hot and then it's ready for the sweet corn batter!
Place about 2 tablespoons of the mix into pan and fry until golden brown. These heat up pretty quick so make sure to keep an eye on them and flip quickly. Remove each one and set on a towel to cool...also to soak up some of the oil. Then plate with your favorite dipping sauce. Some honey could do nicely as well he he!
These fritters were, as suspected flavorful and delicious!
Cheers!

GOT Modern Blueberry Tart

Game of Thrones is Back!
The race for the throne is back this month and I couldn't be happier! To celebrate I made a Modern Blueberry Tart from the A Feast of Ice and Fire Cookbook! Perfect for those tense yet sweet moments GOT brings.
This tart was super easy but there is also an option to make a Medieval Tart which I will try in the future he he! I started by preheating the oven to 375 degrees and got out some pastry dough. The book recommends their Lemon Pastry Recipe from page 10. Yum! I pressed the dough into a tart tin evenly. Next, after rinsing them off I poured my blueberries into the tin, leaving a few for later.
Then I sprinkled the cinnamon sugar evenly over the top of the berries and popped them into the oven. After about an hour (or once the filing started bubbling) I took out the tart and topped it off with the remaining berries and some powdered sugar.
Once the tart cooled a bit it was ready to serve! This made for a very happy viewing party ha ha! Scrumptiously tart with a lightly sweet flavor. As the book suggests, it pairs well with some champagne! he he

Dorne Breakfast

Good Morning!

The Game of Thrones finale is almost here! Yikes! I feel like it just started....so I wanted to celebrate this wondrous show with a nod to Dorne in all its sun-drenched glory.
So beautiful!

From the Game of Thrones Cookbook here is breakfast from Dorne!
To start I chopped up the peppers and minced half to make about three tablespoons. Same with the onions. *I was asked to not saute too many peppers/onions
Then put 4 to 5 tbls of olive oil in a pan on med. heat.

Cook chopped peppers and onions until soft. Add 1 ice cube and cover. This helps steam the veggies. After about 5 mins set veggies aside (in another container) but keep warm.
Next saute the minced peppers and onions in the pan for about 1 min. Add in the 6 eggs, do not stir.
Sprinkle the cheese over eggs while they cook then sprinkle salt and pepper. *I used some salt from our Try The World box! Next scramble the eggs until whites are no longer runny. Once this happens, remove from heat and serve. Place the chopped veggies on the side.
Craig really liked this dish and not only was this Dorne breakfast yummy but it was also colorful! he he
It was fun to put an old world twist on a familiar breakfast.
Now we wait for GOT and make some Lemonsweet he he! Thanks for reading!

Get Ready!

Game of Thrones is almost over for the season....feels like it just started :(

With the finale coming up I decided to pay homage to Dorne with a Dorne breakfast! It has been exciting to see the beautiful landscape and something other than shivering Northmen he he!

I will be making a spicy breakfast dish and Lemonsweet. Possibly something else for dinner...but we'll see.

....SPOILERS...
Oh and a few things. How cool was that White Walker scene last week!!! The episode just started with the usual dialogue...then BAM...horror movie creepiness!
Completely a feast for the eyes!

Stannis WTF!! I mean I get it...magic but come on! I love how she was reading about Dance with Dragons. I see what you did there.
Daeny is possibly the coolest character ever created. Her story lags a bit in the middle but in this last episode it finally took off, pun intended! The moment I am sure most people were waiting for. Drogon came to her rescue and they took off into the sky. She is a dragon rider now! YES! I just waited for them to pan to Tyrion's face....priceless. That had to be worth his trip! Amazing! I wanted that so badly! LOL
Plus she forgave Jorah....I was totally crying like a baby!
Thanks, Bunny

Beef and Bacon Pie

Howdy!
Game of Thrones is back!! Woooooo!

To celebrate I made a Modern Beef and Bacon Pie that Craig picked out, from the Game of Thrones Cookbook.

We also found a GOT beer for the occasion! Very hardy he he!

Also please don't mind my silly videos, it's been a long week. :)

To start I made pie dough (from page 9) using spice, egg yolk, flour, water and butter. I decided to do the pre-cooked crust, but won't next time...that will allow more room to mold the crust around the bacon.
I rolled the dough out with the empty brew he he!
Start creating your bacon lattice, going over and under each piece. Create a large square of bacon and place in oven. Bake for 10 mins and then remove.
Next, in a pan, cook the veggies-onion, potatoes and carrots. We decided to add in some mushroom and garlic, for a more flavorful taste. Stir and cook until onion is golden.
Add the floured beef and cook until browned. Then mix in the beef broth and seasoning.
Once well cooked, let the meat cool. Then add to the pie.
Place to the bacon lattice on top and place in oven. Bake for 40 mins.
Let stand and serve!
I tried asking Craig what he thought...but all I got was a bunch of mumbles...his mouth was too full of bacon! LOL
Also, after placing in the fridge over night for some tasty left overs, it's easily cut into perfect pie slices.

Great for serving to guests.
Thanks for joining me! -Bunny

Elizabethan Lemon Cakes

Continuing with the Game of Thrones cookbook I decided to make Elizabethan Lemon Cakes, Sansa's Favorite!
These cakes...or cookies turned out to be completely delicious!

These cookie-cakes were rather simple to make. Start by mixing the flour and sugar. Then folding in the butter, lemon zest and eggs (1 egg, 2 egg yolks).

Mix thoroughly and add more flower if needed.
The dough took some time to mix to make it easy to shape. The recipe suggests that you can add some water or lemon juice if the dough is a bit dry.
Roll dough into balls about an inch across and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minuets, until slightly golden, then remove from oven and let cool.

Start mixing your confection sugar and milk to make the icing. Once the cookies have cooled, lightly drizzle frosting on top and TADA!! Yummy yummy lemon cakes!
Sansa would be proud!

The South-Arya's Tarts

Hey there!
Okay I finally made Arya's Snitched Tarts from the Game of Thrones Cookbook. I chose to do the modern version, which is a little less complicated.
Still...I had some problems with execution, but the overall taste of the tarts turned out really well.

The problem I had involved not having the right "tools" and that the instructions on how to prepare the dough-sheets is a little confusing. I did not have a round cookie cutter and none of my glasses turned out to be sharp enough to make a proper circle (that was the plan). I ended up with only a few to work with. I should have been more prepared to begin with LOL! But that's how we learn. Shall we begin?

To start you want to lay out your pastry sheets on a flowered surface. Then use a 3 to 4 inch round cookie cutter or glass to cut out 4 rounds from each sheet to make 16 total. Place 4 pastry rounds on each baking sheet and pierce with a fork, all over.
Next use a 3 1/2 inch round cutter to cut out smaller rounds from the center of the remaining 8 rounds, to form rings. Brush the outer edges with whisked/beaten egg, and top each with the pastry ring. Then set in freezer for 30 mins. Preheat the oven to 375.

Unfortunately I am pretty sure that I did this part wrong (making the pastry rounds)...or just not exactly as they intended me too. Either way they still turned out delicious, maybe I can play around with the extra dough and find myself a good cookie cutter he he.

Remove pastries from freezer.
Mix the cheese, salt and lemon juice together. Spread mixture inside the rings of each frozen pastry round.
Cut Gala apple into slices/wedges and overlap on top of rounds. Combine butter and honey and brush over top of the apple slices. Add a sprinkle of allspice and candied nuts on top (optional).
Then place in the oven for 30 mins or until apples tender and pastries are golden. Remove tartlets from oven, let cool for a few mins. Drizzle some extra honey on top and serve!

Arya's Tarts are savory and as the name suggests, tart. You can taste the goat cheese well and it mixes wonderfully with the apples. The bit of candied pecans and allspice really add more flavor too, so would suggest using them.

I will definitely try these again.

The North: Medieval Armored Turnips

Are we Cooking?
Yes Jacky! We are making our first-ever dish from:
THE GAME OF THRONES Cookbook!
For our very first dish, I wanted to choose something relatively easy but interesting and since I can't recall ever having turnips...this seemed like a good choice. I decided to make the Medieval version as well, Turnips in Butter or Medieval Armored Turnips
One cool thing about A Feast of Ice and Fire is that you can choose between making the Medieval version or the Modern version, of a dish.

Okay, for our Turnips in Butter we start by peeling 5 to 6 turnips then boiling them until tender.

Remove turnips from water and let cool.
While waiting, butter the bottom and sides of your baking dish and grate the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. This was Jacks favorite part.
You can use either mozzarella or provolone...but I decided mozzarella is the yummiest he he.

Next you slice the turnips thinly and get ready for the layering process.

This dish also call for a little bit more melted butter and 2 teaspoons of spices. The spices are referring to a Poudre Douce found on page 5. I could only find a few of the spices: nutmeg, ginger, sugar and cinnamon

Layer in this order: cheese, turnips, butter then spice.
Put in the oven and bake for about 15 mins, until cheese is thoroughly melted.
Let cool and then serve.
To be honest, turnips are not that bad, actually a little bit sweeter than potatoes. The cheese also adds more flavor as well...as this dish is very simple...so it is a little bland. :(
I would definitely suggest adding some salt and pepper.

I can see making this recipe again but maybe the modern take which includes garlic and a few richer seasonings.
I can't wait to dive deeper into the Game of Thrones Cookbook! I'm thinking something sweet for our next treat!
